The Nigerian Islamic Police Evacuated Children Living on The Streets of Kano to Place Them in Camp for Rehabilitation.

The Nigerian Islamic police popularly known as the Hisbah, is a committee that was personally set up by the Kano state governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to get rid of homeless children which are mostly boys, from the street of Kano. Kano state is known as the largest city in Nigeria and is located at the northern part of the country.

 The committee has been on the news recently for the actions which they took on behalf of the children hovering and living in the street of kano. They were said to have carried out a midnight raid on the street kids, raiding every corner of the state they usually occupy from the motor parks to the markets and street corners of which the raiding exercise was done when the kids were fast asleep.

 These children according to the state government were said to be a threat to the state, especially in this economic turbulence the country is facing which has forced most of these children to fend and cater for themselves, off which they might take an illegal decision as time goes on to enable them feed and fend for their daily needs, so the government had to take an advisable step of removing them from the streets before it gets out of hand.

 In statement given by the Hisbah’s director-general Abba Sufi to AFP, he said;

“we have so far mopped about 300 of these boys from the streets and taken them in to a camp provided for their rehabilitation. Their continued living on the streets is a huge social and security threat because they are potential criminal recruits.”

“They are a ticking time bomb that needs to be urgently defused with tact and care,” said Sufi.

 As reported, Kano is dealing with a surge in children from broken homes as the rate of separation and divorce in Nigeria has increased drastically, leaving these children to fend for themselves and many of these children has no access to parental care, education and shelter as they are mostly found sleeping on the streets.

 Nigeria which is known all over the world as the “Giant of Africa” is currently facing economic crisis in decades, with an increase in inflation which escalated to 34.6 % in November, which has led to many citizens struggling to feed.

 The economic crisis is getting out of hand as 18.5 million children are currently out of school with Kano state alone accounting for 1.9 million children, this is the highest the country has ever gone according to the survey carried out by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the year 2022.

 The Hisbah command Aminu Daurawa also made it known that many of the children in Kano city came from other neighboring states.
