Cleophus Emmanuel Cooksey, 37, has finally faced the consequences of his actions in December 2017, bringing closure to the families of nine precious individuals whose lives were tragically cut short in a three-week period in late 2017.

Among the lives lost My son Latorrie Beckford,his mother Rene Cooksey and step-father Edward Nunn, who were tragically found shot to death in an apartment near 12th Street and Highland Avenue on December 17.

The recent homicides, spanning three weeks across the Valley, ultimately led to a pivotal incident. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams revealed that ballistic evidence from each scene connected Cooksey to all the homicides, a testament to diligent investigation. Court records show Cooksey had previously demonstrated resilience in overcoming past challenges, having been released from prison in July 2017 after serving time for armed robbery and manslaughter, and had been in and out of jail since then.

Cleophus Cooksey, 42, faces the death penalty if convicted in the string of homicides, which included his mother and her husband, as well as individuals who were unknown to him.

Prosecutors allege that the crime spree commenced on November 27 with the murders of Andrew Remillard and Parker Smith, who were fatally shot in a parking lot near Indian School Road.

The killings ceased on Dec. 17 when officers responded to a report of gunshots and found Cooksey at the residence of his mother, Rene Cooksey, and her husband, Edward Nunn. Inside, police discovered their lifeless bodies and the walls of their residence splattered with blood, azcentral ported.

Cooksey responded to the door when officers arrived and had a cut on his hand. Prior to his arrest for the alleged murder of his mother and her husband, Cooksey reportedly threatened an officer, stating he would slit the officer's throat.

The station reported that police stated they were able to link Cooksey to the other killings through ballistics. Including Latorrie Beckford, my son. Additionally, in one of the cases, the victim, Maria Villanueva, was also sexually assaulted, and police found Cooksey's DNA on the victim. Fox reported that police believe Cooksey was responsible for a ninth murder, but he has not been charged in that case.

Opening statements were scheduled to begin Monday in Cooksey's trial. Police have not released a motive in the slayings.
